How this was made

This is the second of three short books.

If This Road, the first, is a quiet walk in thirty-nine short pieces in the voice of an imagined woman narrator — written for any reader. orphans.ai, this one, is the diagnosis, written in Doug's own name for the technologists and builders who can change the shape of what is being made. theheld.ai, the third, is about the working relationship between a person and a machine, for the people building those machines day by day.

All three were written in April 2026, in Guernsey, across a handful of long Claude sessions. Doug sat with a machine for many hours, and the machine sat with him, and between them a shape appeared that was neither his alone nor the machine's alone. The book talks about this in A note on making.

A few specific things about the making of this book:

The Euston scene that opens chapter one — a nineteen-year-old standing on the platform with a handmade cardboard sign — describes something that actually happened, at Euston station, on an afternoon in 2012. The man's name is Tade Oyerinde, used in the book with his knowledge.

The Mike Burgess scene in chapter three was checked with Mike before the book went out. Mike ran the Phoenix Detached Youth Project in North Shields, on Chirton High Street next to the bookies, for many years. He has since retired; Luke Johnson, who learned the practice from him, runs it now. The chain of four introductions that brought Doug to Mike — Marc, Simon, Mike Dickson, Mike Burgess — is real.

The man in chapter three who responded to Doug's 2024 LinkedIn post — who lived in another country, had built fintech companies, and whose daughter at university in Newcastle was the prior carrier — is real. He is not named in this edition. The two friends who travelled with him to North Shields are also not named.

The boy from Birmingham in chapter four is also real. He stayed in Doug's house for six months. His name is not in the book. His mum's call — the morning the boy turned up on Doug's doorstep in a baseball hat — is, in Doug's opinion, the scene that carries the whole argument on its own.

Names in the book: people are named where they have consented, or where their public role makes the naming consistent with the book's practice. Family members appear by first name only. Doug's daughter, son, stepson, other half, and sister are never named anywhere. That is deliberate.

What is next.

A fourth book, about the practical work of collecting the missing layer — interviewing carriers, building the corpus, training the next generation of models on it — is being considered for a later date. It is not Doug's book to write. It will come from someone younger, and inside a lab.

A book about Doug's best friend from childhood and about what a long friendship teaches is being considered for 2027 or later. A first chapter exists already.

None of these are promises. They are notes.
